Refractory Panel Replacement in Los Angeles
If your home has a factory-built (prefab) fireplace, the interior walls of the firebox are lined with pre-cast concrete panels called refractory panels. These panels absorb the intense heat of a fire and reflect it back into the room, protecting the metal chassis of the fireplace from damage.
Royal Cleaning Service provides refractory panel replacement in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Ventura County, starting at $99 per panel.
Refractory panels crack over time, this is normal. Hairline cracks that do not penetrate through the full thickness of the panel are acceptable and do not require immediate replacement.
However, cracks wider than 1/4 inch, cracks that allow you to see the metal backing behind the panel, or panels that are broken, crumbling, or missing sections are a serious fire hazard and must be replaced before the fireplace is used again.
When heat reaches the metal chassis of a prefab fireplace through a damaged panel, it can deform the structure and (more dangerously) transfer heat to the surrounding combustible framing of your home. NFPA 211 compliant guidelines are clear: a prefab fireplace with severely damaged refractory panels is not safe to operate.
Royal Cleaning Service carries common panel sizes in stock and can complete most refractory panel replacement jobs in a single visit.

How to Identify Damaged Refractory Panels
Inspect your refractory panels with a flashlight before lighting a fire each season. Here is what to look for:
- Hairline cracks, thin surface cracks that do not penetrate through the full panel thickness. These are normal and can be monitored. Do not fill hairline cracks with household caulk or mortar, use only high-temperature refractory cement if needed.
- Cracks wider than 1/4 inch: these require immediate panel replacement. Do not use the fireplace.
- Through-cracks: any crack that allows you to see the metal backing or feel air movement through it. The panel must be replaced before use.
- Missing sections or crumbling panels: replace immediately. Crumbled material in the firebox floor means the panel has failed structurally.
- Bulging or bowing panels: panels that have warped outward from the heat mean the panel has reached the end of its structural life and must be replaced.
Panels are typically sold in sets, a back panel and two side panels. If one panel is severely damaged, we recommend inspecting all three carefully, as they have likely been through the same number of heat cycles. Royal Cleaning Service carries a range of common panel dimensions and can source special sizes for less common prefab fireplace models.
Do Not Use a Prefab Fireplace With Damaged Refractory Panels
Cracks wider than 1/4 inch, through-cracks, or missing sections allow heat to reach the metal chassis and surrounding combustible framing. This creates a house fire risk. Stop using the fireplace and call (818) 301-4365 for a same-day inspection and panel replacement estimate.

- Inspect panels at the start of each burning season
- Look for cracks wider than 1/4 inch or through-cracks
- Check for bulging, bowing, or missing material
- Do not use the fireplace if panels are severely damaged
- Replace damaged panels before first use of the season
Refractory panels are the pre-cast concrete panels that line the inside walls of a factory-built (prefab) fireplace firebox. They are designed to absorb and withstand extreme heat and to reflect heat back into the room while protecting the metal chassis of the fireplace from direct flame exposure.
Refractory panel replacement starts at $99 per panel. Most prefab fireplaces have three panels: a back panel and two side panels. Contact us for a quote on a full set, as pricing depends on panel size and your specific fireplace model.
Hairline cracks are normal and can be monitored. However, you should not use a fireplace if the panels have cracks wider than 1/4 inch, any through-cracks that allow you to see the metal backing, missing or crumbling sections, or panels that are visibly bowed or warped. These conditions allow heat to reach the metal chassis and surrounding framing.
Most factory-built fireplaces installed in Los Angeles area homes from the 1970s onward use refractory panels. Some older models used firebrick instead. We can identify your fireplace type and source the correct replacement panels during our inspection.
The lifespan of refractory panels depends on usage frequency and how hot fires are burned. Panels in regularly used fireplaces typically last 10–20 years. Annual inspection allows you to catch cracks early and address them before they become a safety issue.
Royal Cleaning Service carries common refractory panel dimensions in stock for most prefab fireplace brands used in Southern California homes. Most replacements are completed in a single visit. For less common sizes, we will source the panels and return to complete the job as quickly as possible.
