A stuck-open damper is a significant energy efficiency problem. In Los Angeles winters, warm air from your home escapes constantly up the open flue, essentially leaving a window open year-round.

A stuck-closed damper is a serious safety hazard: if you light a fire with the damper closed, carbon monoxide and smoke have nowhere to go except into your living space.

Common damper problems include rust and corrosion that freeze the damper plate in place, a bent plate that no longer seals, a broken or bent handle rod, and cracked or missing damper frame mortar. Many older fireplaces have cast-iron throat dampers that deteriorate over decades.
